More details to this question:
My dog bit another dog and I sign a receipt saying I will pay for the surgery. 3 months later the dog owner is suing me in small claims court for complications for $1000. Am i responsible for the complications? The vet clinic is notorious for bad practice and I also have a reason to believe the owner didn't take good care of the animal after the incident.

For $1,000.00 its not likely worth fighting over on the basis that "the vet sucks". If you agreed your dog was in the wrong and signed an agreement the agreement controls, by whatever yerms it has, but figting over the value icourt may not be worth it to either side.
