QUESTION

How do Pet Sitters legally operate?

Asked on Mar 18th, 2012 on Animal Law - California
More details to this question:
Hello, I''ve noticed more and more people are starting to pet sit out of their homes and advertising on craigslist. I am interested in doing this as well, but am worried about what laws there are against this. I know of the law of only having 3 dogs per home, but some of these boarders have 10 or more dogs and cats living in their houses with them. Since they are not their dogs and since they are running a business, I can see how they can keep it going, but what would I have to do to start up my own pet sitting business and make it legal so I wouldn''t have to worry about getting fined or having the dogs and cats staying with me seized? I would think a business license would be the first step in the whole process, but would they even grant me one for this kind of business? Thank you for your time and any answers you can give me. - Confused in California

Determining whether this would be an allowable use under the zoning rules for the area where you are thinking about operating this business will be a big issue in deciding whether you can do this business. You need to consult the zoning ordinances for the City or County where you live.  There may be City/County ordinances about animals, and you'll need to review those in determining how many animals you can keep at any one time, and under what conditions.  You may need to obtain a business license from the City or County. If you truly expect to make a success of this business, you owe it to yourself to get the help of an attorney who is experienced in helping people start up businesses - this will help you in many different ways you might not have thought of. Good luck - I hope it happens for you. Brian Chase,  BISNAR|CHASE, Personal Injury Attorneys.  http://www.BestAttorney.com http://www.ProductDefectNews.com  800-956-0123
