Outstanding loan for an amount of $10 K taken 6 years back from US Bank

There is an outstanding loan for my friend, for $ 10 K taken 6 years back from one of the leading bank in US. Due to personal issues he could not repay this, and its outstanding until this point of time and would have gone to collection agency. So my friend would want to work out the negotiated settlement option or part payment option, so in that case if he needs to take the services of a lawyer then how do you recommend we go about it ?
