Can he really make a case based on a verbal agreement we never had?

More details to this question:
Friend is claiming that I agreed to pay him money from a settlement for help I never asked for. Now, my lawyer is holding half my settlement. This friend also worked for my lawyer as paralegal though he has zero credentials or experience. Plus my lawyer paid him $6000.

Most agreements don't have to be in writing to be enforceable. He can make his case and you can rebut it.
