I'm 22 and when I was 13 my social security card came up missing. My parents waited until I was I want to say a junior or a senior in high school to apply for another card. It was during that time that I found out someone had stolen my identity. My parents we're notified about it and said they would take care of it but never did. Someone took out a mortgage and a car loan in my name. My parents waited until now to tell me that I have to deal with this issue on my own because I'm grown now. I've also gotten married to a woman and because of that my parents really want to be hateful and put us out in our time of need. My spouse and I are trying to move but I can't get an apartment in my name because of my credit and she doesn't make enough. I'm working and I actually do make enough. My parents also had a light bill in my name that hasn't been paid off. I had an opportunity in 2014 to get a low income apartment but I couldn't because of that unpaid light bill. Do I have a case against them?
You may have a case against the identity thief, but better cases against (1) credit reporting agencies and (2) persons attempting to collect from you debts which are not yours. Fill out an FTC ID theft affidavit (www.ftc.gov) and submit it to the 3 bureaus and any creditor/ collector on a debt that is not yours. Put a fraud alert on all 3 bureaus. Consult a consumer attorney.
