Domestic support obligations, such as alimony and child suport, are generally not "dischargeable" in bankruptcy. However, a Chapter 13 plan can be used to catch up the back payments over time. This is done under the protection of the Bankruptcy Court, so you cannot be held in contempt by the State Court for failing to pay the back money. Of course, your current support payments must continue to be paid while the Plan is going on. Often, Chapter 13 can reduce your obligations on other debts, such as credit cards, car loans, etc.. This can sometimes free up enough income to allow you to make your current support payments.
Chapter 13 can be complex. Be sure to use an experienced attorney with a history of successful cases dealing with domestic support obligations. Don't hesitate to ask the attorney about his experience and success rate.
