Can your wages be garnished for a defaulted student loan?

More details to this question:
I defaulted on student loans some company is threatening me with garnishment I was under the impression that garnishment in Florida can only be done by the IRS.

They would first have to file a suit against you and get a final judgment before they could garnish wages. Any judgment creditor can garnish wages, not just the IRS. But Florida has a head of family exemption which basically states that if you are the head of a family your wages cannot be garnished. In order to be a head of family you have to provide more than 50% for a child or other dependent. Your wages can be garnished by anyone who has a judgment against you. A collection agency who does not have a judgment cannot garnish your wages.
