How can I improve my credit?

I am currently trying to improve my credit, I have three charged off credit cards with fairly small amounts owed. I have contacted these companies to pay for deletion but they say that they are not able to delete these items only update them. I know this is not true. How can I get them removed? They are the only thing holding me back from purchasing my first home.
