Your best first step is to find a skilled bankruptcy lawyer. You might want to consult friends who have gone through the process. The Wisconsin State Bar has a lawyer referral service which you could try. Some lawyers advertise online or in the yellow pages. My own office does a great many bankruptcy cases, and you will find several dozen lawyers in this area who are proficient in the area. Good Luck.

Lots of people would like to file, but the better question is whether you are eligible to file, whether you actually need to file, or if something more appropriate is an option. I suggest that you begin by putting together a budget of your income and living expenses and see what you have left over that you could use to pay your debts.

Meet with a lawyer to explain the process. For example, I charge $75 for a one hour meeting to discuss all of your options. Younger attorneys will sometimes meet with you for free, but the meetings are very brief (I a lot one hour for my meetings).
