No, it's not illegal if you're behind on your payments. They have the right to repo and just because you promised to turn it over, doesn't take away their right to repo. Only a document signed by both sides will take away the right to repo. Can you imagine how many people promise to turnover their cars then, surprise, surprise, forget to show up?

No, not if you were behind on your payments, or were otherwise in default on your loan.

You have left out a lot of details...were you behind on your vehicle payments? If so, by how much? Were you in a active bankruptcy? If so,was there a court order lifting the stay?

If the loan was in default, and if the lender had already provided the required notices to you, and if the time to cure the payments had expired, then they were free to repossess the vehicle at any point in time.
