More details to this question:
So I fell behind on my mortgage due to getting wrongfully fired. I have been with this lawyer over a year paying 500 a month and a 4,000 starting fee. We havent made any progress in my case. He advised me when we started not to continue making mortage payments since i was already behind. I recieved a letter from the town last week saying my house is going up for auction and will need to leave. He told me not to worry but i still see no progress. I went to a different attorny to get help and when i asked my lawyer for my documents back he said he cannot give them to me, if he does he's closing the case and will no longer work on it. Im not sure what to do.
Lawyers that charge this way are often scammers. This guy has taken your money and done nothing. Your only remedy at this point to avoid losing your house is bankruptcy before the auction. You do not need these documents to do this. Report this lawyer to the police as a fraud, and file an ethics grievance with the bar. Ethical lawyers charge by the hour or a flat rate for work they actually do.
