When can I file for bankruptcy after foreclosure?

More details to this question:
Our house is up for short sale and we were served the foreclosure docs. Is it best to file for bankruptcy and get rid of all our debt except for our cars, or do we wait to see if the house can be sold at short sale?

Usually, you wanna wait and see if the short sale comes through first.
