Bankruptcies are public record. They will always be public. However, the bankruptcy will drop off your credit report from 8 to 10 years depending on the type of bankruptcy and when you receive your discharge.

Plan on it being in the public record and staying there. Right now there is a law that says they can not hold it against you that you filed a bankruptcy after 10 years.

They say nothing lasts forever and always is a very long time. I do not know how far back the electronic records go. I can tell you that the default search on the docket in www.pacer.gov is set at 1974. In this electronic age, it's quite possible that records will outlive us both. For credit purposes, it will be on your credit report for 10 years. I'm wondering why it matters to you. I mean if you are asked if you have ever filed for bankruptcy, the honest answer is yes, regardless when the case was filed and whether it can be looked up. Plenty of successful & famous people have filed bankruptcy. I think 3 presidents have done it. Thomas Jefferson is one most people know. I wonder if it's possible to look up his case. Even if you could what would be the purpose?

The clerk of the bankruptcy court maintains records. They do not purge or delete as far as I know. It will fall off of your credit reports but not the court system.
