I have private student loans, if they go into default can my wages be garnished. I live in Texas. I've contacted the lender servicing my private loans and even tried applying for a temporary hardship and was denied

In Texas, your wages cannot be garnished for non-payment of a private debt. However, if the amount owed is reduced to a judgment, your bank accounts could be garnished to satisfy the judgment amount.
