More details to this question:
A few questions pertaining to our corporation name. We are a multinational conglomerate that designs, produces, markets and services multiple products under various brand names. Our company name is similar to many others and the long version is our email address (ie: alice@thecorpnamecomgroup.com) Additionally, the webpage address with our name is taken by an unrelated large airline (thecorpname.com) and an unrelated IT firm (thecorpnamecom.com).
We''ve been around much longer than the airline and IT firm. Our webpage is thecorpnamecomgroup.com but we''d like to use either thecorpname.com or thecorpnamecom.com.
1. Should we sue the airline and IT firm to claim the web address?
2. Should we band together with the other similar companies to develop a website that lists all the companies and performs a redirect of emails so we can use alice@thecorpname.com?
It is impossible to answer your question in the manner in which it is phrased. Whether you should sue or not depends on other factors you do not set forth, such as whether there is a likelihood of confusion between your services and those of the airline, whether the airline has a registered trademark or other rights in the mark, etc. If you would like to discuss this matter on a professional basis, please call my office during business hours at (203) 399-1320.
