Can a company suspend 2 employees before an internal investigation goes on?

More details to this question:
Lets say a son works at a rival company and his parents work at another that had a data breach. Do they have the right before an internal investagation to tell the 2 parents of the son to leave with pay while the investagation is going on? The son used to work for the same company but left due to them not listening too his complaints about things not getting done right and data may be getting out. And the 2 that are doing the investigation has had problems with the son and parents before.
The law in most states is called "employment at will." This means that the employer is not required to have any reason for terminating an employee unless the employer has a contract with the employee limiting its ability to terminate employees. (Of course the employee can quit for no reason too.) Some states have laws prohibiting discrimination based upon familial relationships, but I am not aware of whether Nebraska is one of them.
