Can they say if you got fired for stealing?

More details to this question:
My daughter just got "let go" they told her. But now I'm hearing in this small town that they're saying, even to family, she got fired for stealing out of the drawer. Which by the way was used by everyone. This was a family takeover and my feelings are they just used her, because she's very good at bringing customers in. I told her this would happen as soon as they didn't need her anymore. I went to c her a couple of times and they were very rude and watching me like a hawk like I was going to steal something. They accused her of stealing before because her tips were so much higher than anyone else. Prior to the family taking over she worked at the same place for approx. 1 year. She has very low self esteem and thought they really wanted her there and she didn't want to look for another job. And now THIS!!

There is a lot of data in your question that is unrelated to "can they say..." As a general rule, an employer may lawfully tell anyone why an employee was fired. If the reason is factually correct, then dissemination of that reason is non-defamatory and perfectly appropriate. If the reason is not factually correct, then telling people may be defamatory. An employer does not need a reason to fire anyone and can generally do so at any time for any reason or no reason at all.
