QUESTION

Client doesn't want to pay, what do I do?

Asked on Nov 01st, 2013 on Business Law - Nevada
More details to this question:
We are a start up company from the UK and have provided a service to a mid sized company based in Las Vegas. Unfortunately they don't want to pay us the full amount we agreed up on in our contract so would like to enforce the payment through an external force. What are our options? If we have to go to court, what coudl I expect the court costs to be and how much should I budget for a lawyer? Keep in mind, the money they owe us is "only" in the 17000 USD range. I appreciate your help and your time.

I first recommend retaining a lawyer to make a demand for payment.  If that does not work, then you will have to bring suit to enforce the contract.  Hopefully, the contract provides for reimbursement of legal fees should the contract require enforcement.  Unfortunately, the cost of litigation may outweigh the $17,000 you are trying to enforce.  Make sure that you retain an attorney who understands that you want either a flat fee or cap on legal fees.  I recommend seeking an attorney through the State Bar of Nevada Lawyer Referral Services.
