More details to this question:
I was working for a landscaper when I accidentally broke his $300 air compressor it was not intentional. He asked me to pay for it and in fear of losing my job I agree to but later on I found out that it possibly would not be my responsibility and because I am in no position to cover that kind of expense would I be responsible for this

What are the terms of your employment? Did you break it as a result of misuse or abuse of it? These are factors that may play in to an answer. consult with a lawyer near you who deals with these issues.
