QUESTION

Small Claims

Asked on Nov 04th, 2024 on Business Litigation - Florida
More details to this question:
I filed a small claims case a year ago, and the final judgment was issued this January 2024. I hired a lawyer and paid half of my retainer fee; I requested that they provide me with a statement of account and a breakdown of what I paid. However, they can't offer it. They billed me, and I asked to deduct what I paid; they told me to call, but I want my record first before I make a phone call to them; I do not know what to do. Please, I need some advice. Thank you!

Not sure how to address your issue - as you relate that you only paid HALF of your retainer fee and it sounds like you are trying to leverage yourself out of paying the other half. Whether you are entitled to a breakdown of the work and billing will depend on the details of how the lawyers were retained. You will need to reivew the details of the retainer agreement preferably with a lawyer. If you can't get it resolved, you can contact the Florida Bar ACAP program to see if it can be worked out.
