Is it child abandonment if I refuse to allow my son back into my home after he was arrested for choking me?

My son was arrested for assault and strangulation against me, his mother, about 2 weeks ago. He has been released from jail to the care of a friend. CPS has told me I have until Friday to pick him up or I will be charged with child abandonment. However, I don't feel safe having him back in my home until he receives treatment and I can't believe that they can force a victim to live with a perpetrator. What are my options?
