Can the police activate your online Facebook account and leave it open for a week to get information?. Our laptop was taken with a search warrant.

Laptop was taken with a search warrant and our facebook acct has shown up as active for a week then disappeared. We dont think any messages were sent out by them but arent sure.

Facebook information is public, so I am not sure what right was violated. Frankly, Facebook is a great place to get information, and I can't understand why people think it is private, like phone messages.
