I am Catholic, what are my religious rights in employment?

More details to this question:
For 5 years I have worked in a restaurant in San Francisco, I have a child that I now would like to baptize. I submitted a change to my schedule with my manager for Saturday and Sundays off to prepare and take the necessary classes needed to get my child baptized. I do not belong to a parish and Im not married. Baptismal's are important and basically the Church wants the longevity of parents and child in the parish, not just to get your sacrament and never to return. I have not been an active member in over 15 years but I am making a commitment to my daughters religious education and thus making a commitment to the church. My employer does not want to grant me 4 months of Saturday and Sundays off. I typically have only been scheduled Sundays. He is asking for me to bring in a schedule of the classes I would be taking to corroborate with my request. I feel like this is ridiculous that I have to defend and prove my intentions. Can my employer do that?

Discrimination is when you are treated differently because being part of a particular group, NOT because you don't get what you want based on being a member of that group.  If your employer gave others who were of another religion the same time off, but not you because of your religion, it would be discrimination.  But in this instance, you have a job, it requires you to work on weekends, they won't give you time off.  That is NOT discrimination and does not violate your civil rights.
