QUESTION

Is a prison guard able to make me stop breastfeeding?

Asked on Oct 11th, 2015 on Civil Rights - New Jersey
More details to this question:
While visiting my brother today who is an inmate at South Woods State Prison, I was asked by a prison guard to stop breastfeeding and told that I needed to immediately go to the bathroom to finish. First, women must wear long shirts that pass their thighs so my baby was covered by my shirt, as well as a receiving blanket. There was nothing exposed, all that you could see was that there was a baby under my shirt. The guard had to first ask my brother if I was in fact breastfeeding. I stopped but refused to feed my baby in a dirty restroom. My baby was very upset and towards the end of the visit, I began to nurse him again, at this time, there was a different guard present that was sitting directly across from me and did not say a word to me about feeding my baby.
