Do i have a slander or defamation case?

More details to this question:
I recently quit my job due to hostile work conditions. I had been asking for help and training for about a year. Finally I asked to step down from my position and was told I couldn't. Since then I have been told by 4 different people that they are telling people I was stealing money . There was an instance when our software wasn't working properly which resulted in conflicting reports and information. I am looking for work and worried this is going to hinder my opportunities.

Maybe. If they are making false statements, then yes, it's defamation. However, you might have to prove damages-- this is where the challenge comes in. If you find it does hinder your ability to find work, and you can prove that, you may have a case.
