I left a diamond ring, which was a gift from him and a gold necklace that belonged to me before our relationship. I have asked repeatedly over the past 5 years and he refuses to return them.

Forget it. You have no title documents or agreements in writing. He will dispute what you are saying. You waited five years. You do not have a good case.
