Hi there, I am a recently graduated medical student, now a doctor, and due to a financial crisis resulting from a bad leak and mold at my former apartment, I ended up very broke and very dependent on a couple former friends who offered to let me move into their place. I've been late on rent but it's always been paid. They have recently began to attack every facet of my being, from my character, to my relationships, to my sanity. The girl I live with wrote up an eviction notice because I am late on rent, which she invited our mutual friends over to deliver in an attempt to humiliate me. Another member of the same group of former friends helped her boyfriend create a humiliating powerpoint which was shown, unbeknownst to me, at a party where hundreds of medical school colleagues were. I was previously "taking the high road" but my reputation and feelings of safety are taking a hit as their attacks escalate. Can I do anything? Kristen
There are several issues that may have legal remedy, the problem is more financial than legal. If you can't make rent, you won't likely be able to hire a lawyer to address and defamation type case, as they are typically not taken on a contingent fee basis with no recovery no fee. Such cases are often expensive to pursue and high risk as far as financial recovery. The obvous issue is that if your freind were generous enough to let you stay with them and you have worn out your welcome, you will need to leave and go elsewhere.
