QUESTION

Can we get a deposit refund, if the contract says it is not refundable?

Asked on Dec 03rd, 2013 on Consumer Law - Florida
More details to this question:
We have booked a wedding venue and now have to cancel , because of immigration issues. We have paid a deposit and the contract that we signed states that the deposit is not refundable. Is there a way to get some of the paid deposit back, e.g. through law that states that certain common practices rate higher than contracts or through goodwill of the company, because of circumstances you can't influence etc? What is our best way to approach this subject with the owners of the venue?

Not generally. They typically have no interest in personal problems that cause you to cancel, hence the no-refund. You can always talk to them to see if they will be understanding, but you may have problems forcing them legally.
