QUESTION

co-signer on a student loan

Asked on Jun 24th, 2013 on Consumer Law - Nevada
More details to this question:
my husband co-signed a student loan for our grandson who now refuses to work for about a year and a half. My husband is now 70yrs old and has had 2 heart attacks and a pacemaker put in. We are on a limited income and cannot afford the payment they require. He really cannot go without his medication and if we had to pay the full monthly payment it would mean either less food or medicine. I am also in failing health with stage 3 kidney disease and alzheimers. Are we allowed to negotiate for a lower payment ?

You are certainly able to negotiate with the Creditor for a payment which you can afford and find manageable.  You should also consider undertaking some legal action to ensure that your grandson is ultimately held liable to pay you back for the monies which you are having to pay for his benefit.
