QUESTION

Deposit to private car seller.

Asked on Aug 22nd, 2016 on Consumer Law - New York
More details to this question:
I went to check a car in New Jersey and really liked it. I left the deposit of $500, and the car owner gave me receipt signed by me and him. We agreed that I would come to pickup the car the next evening. The car was advertised as Clean title, and the owner has not notified me of any such problem. Later the same day I found through the Carfax that an insurance company listed this car as "Complete loss of title". Do I have right to request the deposit to be refunded?

Yes.  But good luck with that.  In my view you were scammed, and you will never see the guy, the car, or your money again.
