What type of lawyer would I contact to resolve a problem with a private college tuition debt?

More details to this question:
I transferred from CSU in Colorado, to Hofstra University in New York, this past fall semester Sept-Dec 2017 I was receiving financial aid and a parent plus loan while attending CSU. I applied for, and received financial aid for my semester at Hofstra and applied again for the parent plus loan. However, the parent plus loan was never funded because I turned 24 this past May. I was unaware of the age limited requirement for loan approval, and apparently so was Hofstra. I was only made aware of a problem after attending almost the entire semester. Now I owe the school $10,000. I requested a payment plan of $ 50 a month. The request was denied, and I was instructed to pay $250 a month until Jan. 2019 and then $400 a month until the loan is paid in full. I can't afford the payment they are requesting. I was told nothing less would be accepted and I would be sent to collection. Do I have any legal right to request a lower monthly payment? semester at Hofstra University in NY.
You can negotiate whatever they will accept. $250 per month seems like a good deal. But if you refuse, you might get a better deal later, but have to pay legal fees, etc., that make it not better.
