QUESTION

Am I responsible for this bill?

Asked on Jul 16th, 2014 on Breach of Contract - Massachusetts
More details to this question:
In May my girlfriend, who works for a dentist, arranged for me to have a crown put in. She said the rate would be discounted to her as an employee and she would pay the balance as my birthday present. In June, she broke up with me. In July, I received a bill from the dentist for the full amount of the procedure that I had agreed to as a gift. What can I do?

You can sue your ex for breach of contract, although it may be difficult for you to prove the contract without any documentation or other witnesses.  However, unless the dentist was also party to the contract, or part of it (for example, he/she could have agreed to the discounted rate but never agreed that your ex would be solely responsible for payment), you would still have to pay the dentist, who is not bound by an agreement you had with your ex, and not with the dentist.
