Can an individaul be held responsible for a deal made through email?

More details to this question:
I had a transaction in which a product was agreed upon between myself an another individual. I set a payment to him as agreeed, upon reciveing it he informed me that part of the product was gone because he sold it elsewhere, and now is has my money. he offered to sed part back with the products he still has but that does not fulfill our deal.

You can make a valid contract through email, and if the other individual breached it, you can sue him for that breach.
