A roof contractor is taking me to small claims court for $1.8K because I refused a final payment on a $7K contract due to his poor and delayed workmanship (a 3-day job took 2 months to complete) causing ice damming on my roof and water damage on the inside of my house. The contractor refuses to admit any wrong-doing. In addition, I was promised a manufacturer's warranty on the roofing materials that was never delivered in any sort of official format. What kind of lawyer do I need to help me avoid paying this roofer any more money?
None. While you can have a lawyer in small claims court, most do not. For $1,800 the legal fees would exceed any settlement you can make. Just bring pictures of the damage to court and your contracts with the guy.
