Any property that is bought or earned during the marriage is considered community, which means that both parties have an interest in the property. This does include earning from employment, retirement, savings etc.  Any property that is owned prior to the marriage or is gotten by gift or inheritance is  the separate property of the party receiving or owning the asset.
