Is a verbal contract binding on a loan?

More details to this question:
I have loaned my friend $515 ($435 of which is documented via PayPal) with the agreement that repayment would be made in 5 days. This individual has made no attempt to repay these monies. My attempts at establishing sound communication have been met with idle threats. All documentation is via text message. Am I legally in the right to file charges for repayment?

I don't know what you mean by file charges, but you can sue the person for breach of contract.
