Is it normal to be counter sued in a small claims court?

More details to this question:
I filled in small claims court against a landscaper who basically failed to meet the initial terms of a signed contract and then when they attempted to remedy the issue, they only made it worse. Now they've filing a counter claim against me for breach of contract
