work performed on my home: contractor not paid

Hello, I had an estimate to do work on my home for 1000... when the men finished they said it was 2000... I never agreed to this and refused to pay, I have been served with a notice to appear in court for 2000 and is this legal!?

Yes. Thats what the court are for - to resolve those disputes. You now need to retain a lawyer to sort his out as they may also be looking for legal fees and expenses from you if there is a  contract or statute providing such.
