How can one reduce the consequences of a shoplifting charge?

More details to this question:
If one is caught shoplifting and admits to having come to the store with the intention to shoplift, is there any way to get out of this with the minimum damage to one's future, if unable/unwilling to spend thousands of dollars to hire an attorney? I.e. what's the least costly way to minimize the consequences to the person's record. This pertains to shoplifting almost $100 of cosmetics from Walmart.. a class B misdemeanor.
