How much trouble am I for filing a false report?

More details to this question:
I told police he stole my car. I have to go on stand and tell them it was not true that I gave him permission to use the car, which is true. Yet he was gone longer than I thought and to get it back.

You are only safe if you do not testify because it would incriminate you. You do not have to testify if it will be something that gets you into trouble. So if they subpoena you then tell them you do not want to testify because your would incriminate yourself. You do not have to tell them why.

You will face either a misdemeanor for filing a false report, or a charge of perjury for lying on the stand.

Filing a false police report is a crime, punishable by jail time. You would be wise to hire an attorney before you go admitting to committing a crime under oath.

You could be charged with filing a false police report, maybe perjury (if the statement was given under oath). You could also be charged with the costs of the investigation.

You could be sentenced up to a year in the county jail. But this is unlikely.
