I have NO prior charges (not even a parking ticket) and the military just dropped me on my head due to a knee injury. So i've been living off the money I saved in the military and there's no jobs where I'm at, which is what inspired the terrible, in the moment, idea to steal. With this being the case, do I stand a chance avoiding jail?
You certainly should be able to avoid jail. Depending on where the case is pending, there may be several options available. In Dallas your lawyer will probably suggest a Memo agreement. Pretrial diversion is another option in other jurisdictions. A reduction to a Class C misdemeanor with deferred probation is another. Have your lawyer explain what these options mean and how they effect you. There is no reason why, with some planning, you need to have a record for this offense.
