QUESTION

Is it considered stealing if your child in under 18?

Asked on May 15th, 2013 on Criminal Law - Florida
More details to this question:
My daughter bought her own car but lives under my roof. She's seventeen and has been getting in trouble, doing drugs and drinking in the car so I took her keys and parked it in my brother's garage she doesn't know where it is and is threatening to call the cops on me. Can she? I'm only trying to keep her out of trouble. She got the car and money for gas from her 18 year old boyfriend, but she says everything is in her name.

I consider it stealing when someone takes something that they have no right to take. You have the right to tell your daughter what she can do. But if she calls the cops, you may get arrested for grand theft, probably as a 3rd degree felony.
