This is a tough one, and one where the "punishment" exceeds the crime. You will at least have a "record" of a detention now. If the case is filed when you go to court, you will be ordered at some point to be booked (if you were simply given a citation at the store), which then becomes an arrest. In most jurisdictions, there is a program called diversion that allows for the charges to be dismissed after you successfully complete it. But the BRN will undoubtedly ask you if you have ever been arrested/convicted of any crime. This is where the difficulty will come for you - how to answer the questions and how to deal with the Board when you apply for your license. You would be well advised to consult with, and possible hire a criminal defense attorney to assist you, and possibly an attorney knowledgeable in this administrative application process.
