What can a person caught smashing mail boxes get charged with?

Someone was caught smashing multiple mail boxes. What sort of consequences would this person have? Is it a federal offense and what does that entail?

It could be a federal offense, but unlikely unless the boxes were the blue ones owned by the feds likely this is criminal mischief, possibly misdemeanor.

It depends on what you mean by mail boxes. If you mean the boxes that out in front of people's homes, that would probably be a criminal mischief charge, a misdemeanor offense in state County Court. If by mail boxes you mean the public boxes that mail is sent from, that is federal property and could be charged as a federal crime.
