What does it mean when a witness is impeached?

More details to this question:
A witness in a possession case was caught basically lying on the stand from her prior statements under oath in another court proceeding, Does that witness become useless to the prosecution? Can charges be put on them?

An impeached witness does not become useless. They are just less believable. If the witness lied under oath and gets away with it, i.e. the truth doesn't come out, then they can be charged with perjury.
