If the State Attorney chooses to prosecute, you will have to appear in court. As a first time offendor, you are a good candidate for a diversion program. In essence, if you complete the diversion program, the charges will be dropped.

Assuming that the officer files the case report with the State you will receive a letter or document to appear in Court. If you fail to appear the Court will issue a bench warrant. If you are a first time offender then this is a minor charge that will hurt your resume more then you directly right now. If you have a defense you should fight this charge. If you dont have defense then you will probably resolve this case with a plea to a retail theft class and court costs.
