QUESTION

What happens for failure to appear for speeding ticket?

Asked on Apr 01st, 2013 on Criminal Law - Michigan
More details to this question:
I failed to appear for traffic court for a speeding ticket, because my daughter is in the hospital for mental illness and she had tried to hurt herself and I was just so overwhelmed that I forgot! Anyways the very next day I called and paid the ticket plus the bond immediately and now I have to appear in court in a couple of days. What will most likely happen? Can I be sentenced to jail time for this? I have a letter from the hospital my daughter is in confirming that she is inpatient.

Bring proof and the judge will give you another date to talk to the prosecutor.

Just take the letter in and the judge will probably not be upset about you not appearing.

Provided that you paid the ticket, you won't be going to jail. By failing to appear, you lost your right to an evidentiary hearing.

Given the facts, and the fact that you have gone to the court and paid the fine it is very doubtful that there will be any additional issues.
