A friend of mine is deciding to hire a public defender or a federal lawyer,what is the difference?

He is locked up in a country jail and charged with federal crimes but wrote a statement under duress in a bathroom without a lawyer present. The charges are sketchy but involve a 16 year old girl who he was talking to on computer with underage photos he said he never downloaded. He is in a county prison in Troy NY and i cannot find him in the database anywhere on the internet. What could he do to better his situation.

A public defender is an attorney assigned by the Court to represent a person who is unable to afford to hire his own attorney. A federal lawyer is someone who appears in federal court.
