QUESTION

Are cops allowed to choose the fine amount for stop sign violations.

More details to this question:
I got pulled over for "not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign" and ticketed $150. I thought this was an outrageous amount and googled the fine for stop sign violations in Adams County, Colorado. It says the total fine is $80. I am wondering if this is legal to inflate a fine so much. I was not in a school zone, construction zone, or crosswalk when I rolled past the stop sign.

Traffic fines are limited only by what the maximum penalty set by statute is, whether state statute or municipal ordinance. I am unsure where you saww that $80 is the appropriate fine. It certainly depends on the court the ticket is written into. Plus there are court costs and statutory fees added to the fine.
