More details to this question:
I live in the state of New Jersey and travel to New York very often. I would like to know that if the police of New Jersey and New York are allowed to search you and your vehicle? I have heard that they are allowed to search you and your car if they have "probable cause". If so, what would come under probable cause? Please include the laws and amendments related to the answer please.
Probable cause to search a person or vehicle arises from the 4th amendment of the US Constitution, that there is "probable cause" to believe there is evidence of a crime being, or having been, committed.
You are asking a great deal from a free site. I can not give you statutes, but yes under the doctrine of public saftey, and plain site they can. These dervive from the US Supreme court cases terry v ohio and the miranda cases.
